Gorgeous antique Victorian sterling silver patch box with bezel-set tiny multi-colored gems. They appear to be a peridot, topaz, garnet, sapphire, ruby, coral and turquoise Beautifully detailed repoussé basket with gem-studded floral centers. Engraved textural pattern around the sides of the box and on the bottom edge. This box 2 hallmarks and is signed with maker's marks. old wash on inside of lid and closes with a satisfying snap. Has ring which allows it to be worn as a pendant. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of beauty patches was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed taffeta and would be pasted on the skin as a beauty mark that would emphasize a lady's feature, usually the cheek. This patch box is 1 1/2" by 1 1/4", holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice.
