Extraordinary! Rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls festoon floral basket on embossed sterling Victorian patch box. Beautifully detailed repoussé basket with gem-studded floral centers decorated with 9 rubies, 4 pearls, 4 sapphires and 19 emeralds!! Hand wrought deeply sculptural flowers encircle the box adding a substantial and luxurious feel to the box. Has 1 hallmark which appears to be a makers signature on the bottom and gold vermeil inside. Closes with a satisfying snap.. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of beauty patches was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed taffeta and would be pasted on the skin as a beauty mark that would emphasize a lady's feature, usually the cheek. This patch box is 1 1/4" by 1 1/8", holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice.
