Very Chic and Rare: This handmade round sterling silver antique French patch box, circa1870's, covered in niello striping in practically perfect condition! Of substantial and sumptuous gauge, this tactile elegant box's very smooth rounded surface feels good in the hand. It is marked "DEP" ("Deposé" ) in tiny letter on the lower right side of the box which signifies it is handmade. The inside of the box is gold vermeil and the rim of the lid has a 900 grade silver mark and 4 (!) other hallmarks. Has a loop which allows it to be worn as a locket. The box is 1.7" diameter and comes with 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Niello, an ancient and special method of enameling where the lines of the design are cut in silver, which is then completely covered with a black composition consisting of copper, silver, and lead. A little borax is sprinkled on, and the whole item is subjected to heat. After cooling, the top surface is scraped and burnished, leaving the black composition in the design lines.
