French Art Nouveau (1900) silver plate patch box with a central cartouche flanked by 2 gorgeous embossed chimera figures (a combination of a fire-breathing lion, goat, and dragon). A mask below the cartouche. The back is embossed with a raised guilloche design which has been overlaid with wonderful repousse arabesques around a central triangle. Original mirror inside lid in perfect condition. 1.5 inches across, holds 1/4 oz. (8 ml) solid perfume of your choice. Patch boxes came into use during the 18th century at the court of Louis XV, where the use of "beauty patches" was popular. A beauty patch was made of gummed silk and was pasted on the skin as a "beauty mark" to emphasize a woman's facial feature, usually the cheek. See example of antique patches in picture below.
